RESILIENCE: Helping Clients Navigate the Heroic Journey

Human beings have an innate desire to make order and sense out of chaos but are often unable to do this effectively. The Heroic Journey is a template for describing the process of moving through challenging life events and coming through those events stronger, wiser, healthier, and more resilient. This framework is often portrayed in movies and literature where the primary character, the “initiate,” is being tested with challenges beyond what he/she thinks can be overcome. The information in this seminar can be utilized with widely diverse populations. Therapists  and non-clinicians need techniques and tools to help empower self and others to overcome adversity, embrace change, and thrive. The Heroic Journey is utilized worldwide to promote resilience and drive individuals to thrive. Clinicians and other professionals can use these timeless concepts to help patients, clients, and students manage the normal passages of life as well as overcome painful and traumatic experiences, including loss, grief, family and life transitions, crises, financial devastation, natural disaster, recovery from addiction or other health issues, and more. Participants in this one-day seminar will examine the four steps universally found in great literature, spiritual texts, and popular culture—known as the Heroic Journey—and learn how to utilize these concepts in a variety of client situations to help motivate and inspire. Attendees will identify the eight micro-stages and focus on the developmental needs and the treatment modalities to effectively move through the stages. In addition, attendees will learn how to utilize and adapt a multi-modal approach, including Cognitive-Behavioral, Solution-Focused, Jungian, expressive, experiential, somatic, internal resource development, and narrative therapies, for most types of clients (or yourself). Participants will also be given an opportunity to reflect experientially, privately or with others, on some of the applications of this seminar and may wish to bring a journal for reflective writing. You will leave with a new set of tools to put to work immediately to enhance your repertoire!

Always available ON DEMAND – RESILIENCE: Helping Clients Navigate the Heroic Journey (clinical CEs given and appropriate for general public with a practice of self-awareness) www.vyneeducation.com and also via DVD and CD self-study (includes 100 page manual).

Restoring Life After Sexual Trauma: Treating Adolescents, Adults and Couples (offered via Cross Country Education/Vyne Education – www.Vyneeducation.com now in audio/on-demand and DVD 6.5 continuing education hours)

Sexual trauma is a seismic event which impacts the person emotionally, somatically, cognitively, spiritually and philosophically/spiritually.  Someone is sexually assaulted every two minutes – both male and female in the United States.  An overwhelming number will experience this trauma sometime in their lifetime with age five being the most common age for assault.  Most victim do not get help for years following and even those who undergo counseling will likely experience some trauma reactivation during adulthood.  Victims who go untreated statically have higher rates of depression, anxiety, cardiovascular disease, are more likely to smoke, struggle with addiction and experience more than average relationship challenges and low immune function.  Essentially, they are grieving the vital qualities of life.

Help your clients take their lives back! This seminar is a resilience-based, multi-modal approach using evidence-based models to help late adolescent and adult sexual trauma victims reclaim and restore their lives.  Many common sexual trauma approaches miss several of the essential and most complicating factors and often cause people to regress and identify more strongly with their trauma.  Often times, the sexual trauma itself is a secondary trauma.  Learn what the PRIMARY trauma often is which disrupts ability to be intimate. Attendees will learn a holistic and post-traumatic growth approach so trauma work doesn’t have to be more painful than it inherently is.  This seminar focuses on strengths – not pathology – and uses a healing perspective versus a curing perspective.

Breaking the Bonds of Sexual Trauma:Using Resiliency-Based Clinical Strategies to Help Survivors Restore their Lives

They have been victims. Now help them discover the hero within, as they break the bonds of sexual trauma and write their own restoration narrative.

The statistics are startling. Every 2 minutes in the United States, a person is a victim of a sexual assault. Over the last 20 years, 4.2 million Americans have been sexually traumatized. This is a seismic event that crosses racial, gender, and socioeconomic lines to impact every facet of a person’s being. It is at the heart of many presenting issues that clinicians encounter in their practices, including relationship challenges, substance abuse disorders, and chronic health problems. Current clinical approaches often miss the mark, overlooking the most essential and complicating factors of treatment. This contributes to clients regressing and identifying even more strongly with their trauma.

Now there is hope for these survivors and those who love them. Melissa Bradley-Ball, an esteemed trainer and speaker on issues of trauma and resiliency, guides you through a resilience-based, multi-modal approach that emphasizes the possibility of post-traumatic growth. Help your clients identify and avoid the activation rituals in their lives. Involve the larger family as important team members in the healing process. Use proven somatic grounding, energy psychology, and cognitive-behavioral techniques to help clients in their heroic journey toward restoration.

  • Determine appropriate treatment protocol based on the client’s level of functioning

  • Explain sexualized trauma composites and how to dismantle them

  • Incorporate the heroic journey resiliency model when working with victims of sexual trauma

  • Apply macro and micro aspects of a client’s story to promote safe and effective trauma processing

  • Design a treatment plan that addresses the unique needs of victims of military sexual trauma and human trafficking
